Chicago — The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Malcom X College project took place on Jan. 7, 2016 for the City of Chicago’s newest education construction project featuring 544,000 square feet with the capacity for 20,000 students. Ardmore Associates served as the on-site project manager for the $251 million project to Jacobs Engineering Group, construction advisor. As the MBE sub-consultant, Ardmore’s services included recommending project delivery methods, proposal coordination and evaluation, technical reviews, bidding and contract reviews.
The new Malcolm X College building is part of the City Colleges $524 million five-year capital plan. It provides an ideal place to prepare students for both college and careers, and serves as the health sciences hub of the City Colleges’ College to Careers initiative. The newest campus project includes health science classrooms, a virtual hospital, general and adult educations classrooms, student services facilities, athletic facilities, and auditorium and a separate parking garage.
Ardmore provided a complete cost estimate for the reinforcing steel in poured-in-place concrete structural elements for the 100% Design Development Set and the 100% Construction Documents for the main building and the parking garage with tabulated and narrative comparisons of the findings. During construction, which started in December 2013, Ardmore provided on-site project management services and engineering support. The project was completed in January 2016 in time for the spring registration with students.
The team members included Moody Nolen as the architect of record and Cannon Design as the designer. Clark Construction Group-Chicago LLC was part of the joint venture as the general contractor.
